Around Panorama Friedrichstrasse

Experience Berlin around your Berlin Mitte apartment at Panorama Friedrichstrasse. This location is great for exploring, as Oranienburger Strasse and Friedrichstrasse are part of the cultural centre of Berlin.

The area around Oranienburger Strasse was one of the first areas to culturally re-awaken after the fall of the wall in 1989. On this street is the old department store building Tacheles, which was abandoned at the end of the war since it was in a bad state of disrepair and was slated to be demolished at the end of the 80s. In the time during the reunification of Berlin, artists from all over Europe quickly took over this old department store as a squat and founded the first cultural centre in Berlin. For years afterward there was controversy over the ownership of Tacheles and if the squatters had truly acquired the rights to the building. Today the centre is a cultural leader in the capital city and it is hard to imagine Berlin without it.

Restaurants at the east end of Oranienburger Strasse have experienced a proper boom with the revival of the Hackesche Hoefe (courtyards): pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants are sprouting up like mushrooms in this area. Following in the restaurant’s footsteps has come the designer stores, which offer such things for purchase as those that are available only in London, Paris or New York.

With the restoration of the synagogue on Oranienburger Strasse, the Jewish presence returned to Berlin’s centre. Today there are numerous clubs and music shows through which you can experience the Jewish culture in this area.

Likewise, Friedrichstrasse also has a lot to offer culturally. It is here that in the last couple of years new cultural attractions have sprouted up beside the already established Friedrichstadtpalast. The Quatsch Comedy Club provides humourous entertainment and in the former Metropoltheater, now titled the Admiralspalast, old operas such as the Three Penny Opera are performed.
